Supposed to break apart upon firing. Its main purpose is to ease feeding of the wad on some reloading machines. The DRV-20 will come as close as any other wad available, except for the Remington SP 20 wad, which is designed for 1 oz. shot loads. The DRV-20 has a very weak cushion section, which can be easily collapsed to allow for additional shot, and shouldn't be too prone to rebound and cause the crimps to open. When I moved up to a MEC 9000 reloader, the results still were not good, perhaps even worse. I tried increasing the wad pressure to 60 – 70 lbs but I was told by MEC that I should not do that.
